Frequently Asked Questions

Q.1
What is Melbourne Operatic Society (MOS)?
A.1
MOS is a group of amateur singers who perform Gilbert and Sullivan Operas and concerts. It is a registered charity.
Q.2
Where does MOS rehearse?
A.2
We rehearse on Tuesday evenings  at Melbourne Assembly Rooms. Principal rehearsals are held on Wednesday evenings, usually at venues in Castle Donington.
Q.3
Where is the annual show performed?
A.3
At the Duchess Theatre in Long Eaton. The theatre holds an audience of about 180 with comfortable tiered seating. There are four performances of the show, from Wednesday to Saturday evening.
Q.4
What is the sequence of events through the year?
A.4
Work starts on learning the music for the show in August. Auditions for principal parts are held in September / October. Through the autumn show rehearsals continue in parallel with the Christmas concert. In the new year efforts are concentrated on the show until its production in March/April. After the show we start the summer concerts, which usually take place in July, and then it all starts again.
Q.5
Where does MOS perform concerts?
A.5
Concerts in aid of our own funds are held in summer and at Christmas at the Melbourne Assembly Rooms, the Catholic Church in Castle Donington and the Duchess Theatre in Long Eaton. For a modest fee we perform concerts for other organisations in the area and can also offer entertainment by smaller groups where this is more appropriate.
